Food waste targets and regulation

Food waste reduction has moved from voluntary commitment to policy target.

Global: SDG target 12.3

UN Sustainable Development Goal target 12.3 aims, by 2030, to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains. UNEP’s Food Waste Index tracks progress on the waste part of the target.

European Union

The EU’s revised Waste Framework Directive sets binding food waste reduction targets for Member States to reach by 2030, compared with a 2021–2023 baseline: a 10% reduction in processing and manufacturing, and a 30% per capita reduction in retail, restaurants, food services and households combined. Member States, including Denmark, must put measures in place to reach them.

Retailers can expect growing attention to how much food they waste and what they do to prevent it.
