Waste is a climate issue
Food that is produced but never eaten carries all the emissions, land and water of its production for nothing. UNEP’s Food Waste Index Report 2024 estimates that food loss and waste generates 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Policy is moving in the same direction. UN Sustainable Development Goal target 12.3 calls for halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels by 2030, and the European Union has agreed binding national food waste reduction targets for 2030 under its revised Waste Framework Directive. Preventing waste at the ordering stage is the highest rung of the food waste hierarchy: better than redistribution, and far better than disposal.
