Inventory optimisation
By analysing weather patterns, local events, traffic flows, seasonality trends, holidays and schedules, Chopp helps grocery stores optimise their inventory.
The balance every store manages
Inventory is a trade-off between availability and cost. Too little and customers leave without what they came for. Too much and capital is tied up, shelves are crowded and perishables expire.
Forecasting does not remove the trade-off, but it moves the balance point. When expected demand is known more precisely, less buffer stock is needed to reach the same level of availability.
Inventory decisions a sales forecast informs
| Decision | Without a good forecast | With a good forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Order quantity | Repeat last order, adjust by feel | Order to predicted sales for the coming period |
| Safety stock | Fixed buffer for every day | Buffer sized to the uncertainty of each day |
| Fresh production (bakery, deli) | Same batch plan every day | Batch plan follows expected footfall |
| Markdowns | Reactive, at end of shelf life | Fewer needed because less surplus is created |
