Seasonality trends
Grocery demand runs in cycles: the shape of the week, the month and the year.
Why seasonality matters
Seasonality is the part of demand that repeats. In grocery it appears at several levels at once: day of week (weekend stock-ups), time of month (around paydays) and time of year (summer produce, winter baking, festive periods). Modelling these cycles explicitly is the core of time series analysis.
How it typically shows up in grocery demand
| Situation | Typical effect on demand |
|---|---|
| Weekly cycle | Higher volumes on Fridays and Saturdays in many stores |
| Annual cycle | Seasonal produce, summer drinks, winter baking |
| Product life cycle | New products ramp up; seasonal lines start and stop |
| Trend | Gradual change in baseline demand over months |
General patterns observed across grocery retail. Actual effects vary by store, location and product.
Using it in a forecast
Classical and modern time series methods decompose sales into trend, seasonal components and residual. External signals such as weather and holidays are then used to explain what the seasonal pattern does not. See time series forecasting.
